The Church Music Director

Several pastors have asked what they should look for when choosing a church music director. Here is a starting place to consider regarding his qualifications, responsibilities and his relationships with others.

I. His Qualifications

A. Personal: divine calling, consistent, clean testimony, servant attitude, vital, energetic behavior, patient, loving spirit, warm, friendly personality, straightforward simple manner of expression

B. Music: thorough musical knowledge; clear, expressive and dynamic conducting style; understanding and application of good vocal/choral technique; wide knowledge of hymnody; working knowledge of suitable choir repertoire; constant learning, developing of new skills, searching for new material

II. His responsibility – a singing church

A. Congregational singing: coordination of all departments, training song leaders, training accompanists, leading main services

B. choir program – adult, youth, and children: open membership, varied, suitable repertoire, efficient rehearsal schedule, worthwhile, challenging performance outlets

C. related music ministries: instrumental ensembles, music classes and lessons for church musicians (song leading, voice, instrument, theory), radio and TV, recording, church-sponsored sacred concerts

III. His relationship

A. to the pastor: positionallly – his superior, personally – his pastor

B. to the congregation: positionally - a leader (choir officers, music committee, deacons); personally - a relationship builder

C. to the music staff: positionally – a leader; personally – an example and a full participant
